The former President of UCLG Africa, and former Olkejuado county council chairman, Tarayia ole Kores, was today awarded honorary member of UCLG Africa in Kisumu.

Kores now joins a list of heads of state and government like the former Tanzanian President Jakaya Kikwete, South Africa’s Thabo Mbeki, Ghanaian’s Jerry Rawlings, former Liberia President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, and Mozambique’s Joaquim Chissano.

Those awarded along with Kores during the ongoing 9th edition of the Africities Summit in Kisumu, Kenya, were former Ouagadougou and Burkina Faso mayors, and former Gabon rime Minister.

The former Olkejuado county council chairman’s award was under the category of former leaders of local governments in Africa.

Nomination to the list of honorary members of UCLG Africa Article 5.4 of UCLG Africa’s constitution provides for granting the status of honorary member of the organization to personalities committed to the cause of local governments in Africa or who have rendered eminent services to the organization.

Others are former leaders of local governments in Africa as well as personalities
from the economic world, the academic world, civil society, or international cooperation
institutions in addition to former heads of state or government.

Earlier in the day, Kores was allowed to take around Kenya’s former Prime Minister Raila Odinga to visit foreign African stalls at the summit.

Kores thanked the organisers of the event for recognising his services while he was the president of UCLG Africa.

“I am grateful for this. To be listed among Africa’s eminent persons is not a simple matter,” said Kores on Friday evening.
