The United Democratic Alliance leadership led by DP William Ruto is expected in Kajiado county on Friday to receive defecting Jubilee leaders.
Key among those expected to cross over from the ruling party is Kajiado East MP Peris Tobiko, the younger sister of Environment CS Keriako Tobiko.
The CS is opposed to DP Ruto’s leadership and have exchanged bitter words in the past when the number two in the country visited Kajiado to market his party.
On the other hand, the CS’s sister, who is the first female Maasai to be elected MP in the 2013 general election says she sees no future in Jubilee after 2022.
“I am moving to where my followers have faith, I do not decide alone on matters of this magnitude,” said MP Tobiko.
The MP, who has also declared her interest in the gubernatorial race, says she wants to make another history in becoming the first woman Maasai governor in 2022.
Her brother, who is the CS in President Uhuru Kenyatta’s government, is supporting opposition doyen Raila Odinga in the 2022 presidential race.
The CS has held hands with Kajiado governor Joseph Lenku to fight off UDA insurgence in the county after nearly all the elected MCAs showed interest in Ruto’s party.
It is not clear if the two Tobikos are talking on a family level given the fact that the CS has stood with Lenku, Raila and Uhuru while the MP is on the other side of the fence with Ruto.
The MP, who is a political science graduate of the University of Nairobi, is a political orator and can only be equalled to Ruto.
Her entry into the UDA party is expected to create some shivers among other candidates such as Katoo, who is also eyeing the governor seat.
While Tobiko is a crowd puller, Katoo is considered by local political pundits as “lustre” and not “combative”.
All the events scheduled for the day on Friday will take place at the home of the MP in Ilpolosat, 26 km from the KAG University junction on the Athi River/Namanga highway.
The DP, according to the local program, will meet delegates from all the six sub-counties of Kajiado county – Isinya, Mashuuru, Central, North, West and South.
The MPs who have already moved to UDA include George Sunkuyia (West) and Katoo ole Metito (South), along with 18 MCAs out of 25 elected.
Friday Ruto’s visit to Kajiado will define the county’s political journey ahead of 2022, given the fact that all the strongest gubernatorial candidates opposed to Lenku have trooped to UDA.
They are Katoo, Tobiko and former NTSA boss Francis Meja. Kajiado is watching closely how Ruto will handle the nomination of the party’s gubernatorial candidate without hurting the voters.
