The area MCA Justus Ngossor was said to be away in Kajiado and that he had promised to fuel the hired car so it can carry the stranded back to Lenkisim.

Seventeen supporters of governor Joseph Lenku are stranded in Ewuaso Kedong town after they were abandoned on Tuesday evening.

The 17 are among the more than 300 people transported by governor Lenku to be part of his entourage on the auspicious occasion of commissioning a hospital that was constructed by the late local MP, George Saitoti.

300 – number of people

More than 300 people were transported from Iloodokilani, Nkaimurunya, Ongata Rongai, Loitokitok, Kajiado, Lenkisim and Namanga.

Among the stranded are 15 women and two men, whose arrangement to be part of the entourage was planned by the wife of the governor, Edna Lenku, according to Serah Pateri.

“I met with Mrs Lenku on Saturday and she requested me to look for a vehicle that will transport us on Tuesday to Ewuaso for the graduation of adult learners and later the official opening of a local hospital,” said Pateri on the phone.

Pateri told KNU that Lenku’s wife gave her Sh10, 000 to cover for the lunch of the 17 on that particular day.

“While we were still in Ewuaso and after the ceremony, I told Edna’s PA that the owner of the Naekana SACCO matatu, which we had hired wanted his money, but the PA misled his boss by claiming we had used a government vehicle,” said Pateri.

She claimed the governor’s wife told her to fuel the car they had hired using the Sh10,000 she had given her.

Sh 40,000 – amount for hire

“We could just fuel that car because the agreement was that, Edna would pay the owner of the car Sh40, 000 in Ewuaso before he takes us back to Lenkisim,” said Pateri.

She said the governor is their neighbour in Lenkisim and each of them is known to Lenku and his wife.
Our effort to reach out to Mrs Lenku hit a snag when she did not respond to text messages seeking her clarification.

The owner and driver of the car, Simon Nderitu, said the agreement with Mrs Lenku was that she pays him Sh40,000 after reaching Ewuaso town on Tuesday.

“After reaching Ewuaso, some 300 km from Lenkisim, Mrs Lenku avoided me and even refused to respond to my calls and messages,” said Nderitu.

Loitokitok

Nderitu explained that a woman in Loitokitok, who is involved in adult education matters in the county, communicated with Mrs Lenku, who later told her to look for a matatu to hire.

He claimed that after realising that the wife of the governor had abandoned them, he decided to take all his passengers to the local police station in Ewuaso.

Some of them are old women while others are lactating mothers.

“I recorded my statement at the police station, and the police later attempted to reach out to the governor through calls and messages but there was no response,” said Nderitu.

Nderitu claimed that after Edna declined all his calls and those of the police officers on Tuesday night, she made “many” calls the following day on Wednesday accusing him of “furnishing” her name and that of the “governor”.

He said that happened after he had posted photos on social media showing the stranded women at the police station.

“She told me to carry their supporters to Lenkisim so she can pay my money but I am doubting her. I am now demanding Sh50,000 and not the initial Sh40,000,” said Nderitu.

Some of the 15 women now holed up in Ewuaso said they left young children back in Lenkisim and are worried about how they faired on Tuesday night along with their husbands.

The local police station in Ewuaso could not provide dinner and breakfast for the 17 people who slept there because, under the law, they are not suspects.

Nkomeya offers a hand

The area’s former councillor, Parsereti ole Nkomeya, said he was forced to buy breakfast and lunch for the 17 on Wednesday after efforts to get the governor hit a snag.

“These people from Lenkisim were very hungry in the morning after sleeping in the cold on Tuesday night. On that day, they had been fed with half bread and a bottle of soda each,” said Nkomeya.

Mkomeya said the governor had put him in an awkward situation and does not know where he will get Sh50,000 to pay the driver of the hired NAEKANA SACCO vehicle.

Ngossor, who has been variously attacked by Lenku in several fora for allegedly “undermining” his work, was not invited to the occasion on Tuesday.

The hospital which was officially opened by the governor was constructed using CDF money by the late Saitoti and the county government recently painted it before opening it.

Nkomeya said the governor opened the doors of the health facility but did not bring in drugs.

“This was a ceremony of strangers. No one, even our MCA, was invited to that occasion. He came with his people from other sub-counties to give him the moral support, which he could not get locally,” said the former councillor.

The governor’s office is yet to clarify why it used hired vehicles to transport people from as far as Loitokitok to go and witness the opening of a dispensary.
