Two Siaya-based police officers seen by detectives on CCTV committing a felony have been nabbed and their guns confiscated.
Both, a senior sergeant and a police constable, are attached to Sawagongo police post in Gem sub-county, are now being held at the Central police station in Kisumu. They were arrested at the police post by DCI detectives from Kisumu on Thursday afternoon and sleuths also took away their guns for exhibit purposes.
The two, according to Nyanza regional police commander Karanja Muiruri, were linked to an attempted robbery incident reported two weeks ago in Kisumu City. According to the police, the duo was captured by hidden CCTV cameras at a petrol station within the town during the attempted robbery.
Their victim who owns the gas station is a businessman of Asian origin. In the 1 minute and 46 seconds footage, a car with three occupants is seen moving to the gas station as if to refuel. The car, a BMW model is driven towards the car belonging to the businessman before it finally stops.
Three men emerge from the suspects’ car wearing face masks, two of them carrying big guns and all walk towards the businessman’s car. One of the suspects was wearing has a Marvin while his two colleagues had hats.
The footage shows one of the unarmed suspects ransacking the car’s trunk as his colleagues are seen talking with the businessman, with their guns visible. In the footage, still, one of the armed men is seen gesturing as if ordering the businessman out of the car after opening the left backseat door.
A man who had been conversing with the businessman is seen walking away as the gangsters pull up at the gas station. The three men then jump back into their car and drive away.
According to a police incident report seen by KNU on the matter, apart from the two guns recovered from their houses, the detectives also recovered a pink marvin, a black blazer and a mobile phone. Other items seized from the suspects from their houses at the police post included a maroon polo shirt and one jungle hat.
The regional police boss told KNU on Friday that the two policemen were nabbed in connection to an attempted robbery with violence case reported in Kisumu in which they are suspects. A civilian who is an accomplice is said to have linked the duo to the crime.
The civilian who had been arrested earlier by the DCI reportedly mentioned the two officers during Investigations. Muiruri said the case is under Investigations, adding that the suspects will be arraigned next week.
