No live sheep and goats shall be ferried out of Kajiado county except those for rearing purposes which will require a special permit from chiefs.
Agriculture CEC member Jackline Koin while quoting the county livestock sale yard Act 2020 said this has been necessitated by rampant theft of livestock in pockets across the region. The order takes effect immediately.
Koin said after wide consultations between the national and the county governments, it was decided that all sheep and goats shall also be slaughtered in a county registered abattoir and ferried as carcasses.
“Only sheep and goats for rearing shall be issued with a movement permit upon producing an introduction letter from the destination area chief,” said Koin.
She said all big livestock (cows, camels etc.) from the sale yards shall be moved out of the county upon issuance of the movement permit by the county animal health inspectors and validated by the area of origin chiefs and the livestock and the livestock sale yard committees.
The county agriculture minister also banned all movement/ferrying of all livestock and livestock carcasses from 6 pm to 6 am, and anyone caught breaking that order should be liable to a fine not exceeding Sh 50, 000.
