Kajiado politician and former NTSA boss Francis Meja today gave a glowing tribute for the late former Nairobi county speaker Alex ole Magelo.

“It is very sad news that we have lost a respected and generous leader. As a community, we have lost a kingpin, who tirelessly stood with his people across the counties of Narok and Kajiado,” said Meja, one day after Magelo passed on at a Nairobi hospital following a short illness.

Kajiado county public service board vice-chairperson, Purity Sein, equalled the late Ole Magelo with the late William ole Ntimama, saying the two fearlessly stood firmly with their communities.

“We have lost a son who stood for our virtues at all moments of his life. He was too a generous man, not to his relatives but all those around him. He was born to give and care,” said Sein.

Another politician and businessman, Dr Solomon Kinyanjui has sent his condolences to the family of the late Ole Magelo and described the former Nairobi county speaker as a “warm-hearted” leader.

Opposition doyen, Raila Odinga, in his message on receiving the sad news of Magelo’s death, said: “In Ole Magelo, the Maa nation has lost a strong and fearless leader who stood up for them without apologies.”

Raila said he has lost a steadfast and reliable friend, while the country has lost a patriot, a great football enthusiast and official.

The death of Ole Magelo has caught many by surprise with the Nairobi County Assembly mourning its first Speaker.

To many MCAs, the late Magelo was a father figure, a nobleman and a no-nonsense Speaker who will be missed dearly.

Sending his condolences to the family, Majority leader Abdi Ibrahim Hassan alias Guyo described Magelo as a strong, dependable and firm servant leader.

“I was the minority leader during the tenure Magelo served as a Speaker and I can tell you he was very firm and didn’t entertain any form of nonsense in the assembly,’ he said.

He was firm in his decisions, was in control of the debates and, unfortunately, we have lost a leader whose calibre cannot be replaced,” Guyo added.

To Minority Whip Peter Imwatok, Magelo was a great man and a father to many young MCAs as he would refer to them as sons and daughters.

“Magelo was a father to many of us who started in the first assembly. Some of my colleagues Moses Ogeto, Chege Mwaura and myself are the great debaters in the assembly due to the tactics we learnt from him

Majority Whip Paul Kados said the late Magelo never allowed fights in the assembly and treated both MCAs from Cord and TNA equally.

“I met Magelo in 1992 and over the years I can say he was a man who had a heart for everyone and what I can say is we have lost a father,”

“As a speaker, he would give us equal attention and never allowed wrangles among us. I have lost a friend and may God grant his family comfort,” Kados add

“A great man and an astute moderator he was. I remember every time members complied with his orders in the chambers he always complimented them with his slogan, you are a good citizen, may his soul rest in peace,” said Karen MCA David Mberia.

“He showed exceptional leadership and great wisdom while discharging his duties. We have lost a great man and a leader,” said Ngara MCA Chege Mwaura.

Deputy Governor Ann Kananu said Magelo during his tenure served the legislative and executive with a lot of dedication, diligence, kindness and humility.
