Maa nation leaders mourn Ole Magelo’s death

“He was a martinet for political aggressiveness and used his platforms to unite the community and teach us new things — even those we figured we knew,” said Sunkuyia. 

Former Nairobi County Assembly Speaker Alex Ole Magelo has died following an illness that kept him at a Nairobi hospital for weeks.

Magelo died following a short illness at Nairobi Hospital on Friday at 10.10 pm, Kajiado governor Joseph Ole Lenku has confirmed.

“It is with a heavy heart that I announce the death of one of our greatest sons and warriors of our community. The late Magelo died at Nairobi Hospital where he has been admitted for some weeks now,” Lenku said.

Narok senator Ledama Ole Kina sent his condolences to the family of the deceased.

“Today is a sad day for us! I am saddened by the departure of a true friend and a son of the Maa Nation Speaker Alex Magelo. Rest well with the Angels say hi to Saitoti, Ntimama and John Keen for us,” he said.

Magelo who was a Former AFC Leopards boss was in charge of Leopards when the club was promoted back to the top tier league in 2009.

After leaving Leopards, Magelo ventured into politics, serving as the Speaker of the Nairobi County Assembly, from 2013 to 2017.

Last year, Magelo withdrew from the race to succeed ousted Nairobi County Assembly speaker Beatrice Elachi and supported current speaker Benson Mutura.

Kajiado West MP George Sunkuyia said Magelo was a consummate and committed friend whose depth of knowledge and understanding of issues was exceptional.

“He was a martinet for political aggressiveness and used his platforms to unite the community and teach us new things — even those we figured we knew,” said Sunkuyia. 

He went: “Magelo a widely read hero, was simply in his class; a man of varied intellectual pursuits”.

The MP said the Maa nation, will miss his illuminating career.

Nairobi Women Rep. Esther Pasaris also sent her condolences to the family of the late former Nairobi County Assembly speaker.

Kajiado County Public Service Board official Purity Sein also sent her condolences to the bereaved family.
