STRAW POLL: Results may reflect a true picture in subsequent elections if a candidate maintains sustained contact with voters

Politician Wilson Kisemei beats eight other contenders in the latest Straw Poll popularity test for the 2022 Kajiado East MP race.

Kisemei, who is joining elective politics for the first time, could have been Kajiado East MP if an election was held today.

The Straw Poll sampled 239 people, who voted for all the nine contenders, in Kajiado East and Kisemei received 65 votes which represent 27.20 per cent.

Keton

Douglas Keton was second with 54 votes representing 22.59 per cent of the total votes. Keton and Kisemei gave the rest of the contenders a wide berth in the poll that took 2 days.

The other contenders are; Mary Seneta – 37 votes (15.48 per cent), Timothy Sayiore – 29 votes (12.13 per cent), Kakuta Maimai – 24 votes (10.04 per cent), Koin Lompo – 18 votes (7.53 per cent), George King’ori – 18 votes (3.35 per cent), Daniel Kanchori – 2 votes (0.84 per cent) and David Parseina – (0.84 per cent).

How the candidates scored. How the candidates scored.
How the candidates scored.

In the last popularity test done by KNU, Sayiore beat the rest of the contenders to emerge the winner. It appears after that test, he stopped consulting with his voters.

This poll is not 100 per cent an indicator that if you win it, you will also make it in the general election.

But results may reflect a true picture in subsequent elections if a candidate maintains sustained contact with voters.

This poll, too, can help popularise a candidate of choice. That candidate must make his/her manifesto clear to the voters.

Metropolitan

The people of Kajiado East, a metropolitan area of the county, want visionary leaders who will think outside the box in leading them.

Kisemei, perhaps, won this poll because two weeks prior to this exercise had sold his agenda to the people of Kajiado East.

He talked about water, good roads and sewer line in all the urban towns in the constituency. He also talked about working hospitals and refurbished schools.

KNU will be carrying out these popularity tests regularly to test the contenders. The test also tells us which candidate is feasible on the ground.

News Update will also be carrying out a popularity test for the Kajiado West constituency this weekend.

Back to the just concluded Straw Poll results, there was a strong indication that many of those who had run in general elections scored the least marks.

It appears that the people of Kajiado East are tired of them and would wish to have new hands in leadership positions.
