Former Kasarani sub-county police commander (SCPC), Muthuri Mwongera, is the new Kajiado county police commander after taking over from Beatrice Gachago.

Mwongera, who served Kasarani with diligence, comes to Kajiado on promotion to replace Gachago, who feared the media to her bone marrow.

Unlike Gachago, Mwongera worked closely with the media in Kasarani, which is the hotbed of crime in Nairobi County. Perhaps his hard work earned him the promotion.

The business community in Kitengela, Ngong and its surrounding areas are expecting the new police boss to tame wayward officers in those areas, who are harassing them day in, day out and asking for a Sh 200 bribe.

In Ngong and its surroundings, there are more than 200 bars or so, and police officers using vehicle registration GK B 792G allegedly start collecting bribes from 7.30 pm every day.

Bar owners, who have been hit by the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic, have no one to complain to over the frustration caused by the police.

Those who refuse to pay the Sh 200 are raided during the day, and if found selling beer before official hours are arrested and made to pay higher fines ranging between Sh 5000 and Sh 10,000 at the police station.

In Kitengela, armed police officers start at the same time moving from one bar to the other asking for “protection” money, which is normally ranging from Sh 100 to Sh 200 every day.

Some of the bar owners we interviewed said their behaviour is “so annoying” when they see armed police officers begging for money.

“When you don’t give them the money, they will go and return at closing time and stand at the door. If you close past a minute, they will jump in and arrest everyone inside,” said one businessman.

Another businessman in Ngong said: “It appears these cops are trained in taking bribes because when new ones are transferred to this town, they act just like those who have been transferred elsewhere.”

He said the police in Ngong carry a register of all the bars they collect money from every day.

Mwongera will be assisted in Isinya by the newly posted SCPC, Anderson Njagi.

Njagi holds a Master’s degree in Business Administration and is said to be an “accomplished” police officer. He takes over from Kinyua Mugambi, who has been transferred elsewhere.
