Police on Sunday said they have started an investigation into a suspected suicidal case of a male patient from Kajiado County Referral Hospital on Saturday.

Kajiado Central Sub-County Police Commander, Issa Muhammed, said on Sunday the body identified to belong to that of James Loiduka, was discovered by a herder in Esokota area, some kilometres from the referral hospital where he had been booked on Friday evening.

Muhummed said the body was retrieved by police on Saturday evening and was found 40 feet below Kajiado-Magadi railway line.

“We suspect he fell off from the railway line because he suffered physical injuries on his chest with a broken left foot,” said the police commander.

County Health Minister Esther Somoire ruled out neglect from the hospital’s staff adding that the patient was admitted on Friday with a case of severe hypertension.

“Because the police have taken over the investigation on the matter, I do not want to speculate on it, but what I want to clearly say is that the patient had a bath around 5 am on Saturday and might have walked out of the male ward unnoticed and escaped through unfenced location at the base of the hospital,” Somoire said over the phone.

Somoire further claimed a message from the deceased person’s phone showed he wrote to his brother on Saturday at 4 am indicating he would wish to be buried decently.

She said doctors at the facility had only one thing to do; “To manage severe hypertension, which requires time to bring down.”

The minister further said the male ward the patient was booked has toilets outside and that she suspects the deceased walked out and left the facility using unofficial outlet at the base of the hospital and walked to his death.

The deceased is a resident of Ilng’osuani village in Isinya. His body was taken to Kajiado referral hospital mortuary and a postmortem would be carried on Monday, the police said.
