Deputy President William Ruto (above) on Monday said taxation is inevitable because that is the only way government can meet its obligations.

Ruto, who spoke in Kajiado after laying a foundation stone for a public technical university, said the government raised taxes on petrol on Saturday to help it undertakes development programs in its agenda.

“Taxes are inevitable and Kenyans should not make noises about the weekend rise in prices. What we are doing is to look at that rate so that we do not appear to be insensitive to Kenyans. We will sit down with stakeholders and come up with a solution,” said the DP.

The DP did not elaborate on who the government is talking with as regards the rise in pump fuel that has raised uproar among transporters and Kenyans in general.

Ruto was talking at county government demonstration farm before officiating over the sale of goats, whose proceeds will assist vulnerable families to access medical healthcare insurance cover under the National Hospital Insurance Fund.

The goat sale auction in Kajiado saw more than 3, 000 goats sold out and more than Sh29million raised. The amount was handed over to NHIF to cover for 5, 000 individials from vulnerable families.

The DP said the government in the next 60 days will purchase a Sh150 million CT scan for Kajiado referral hospital.

“In 2013, 90, 000 households in Kajiado had been connected to electricity, but today I am proud to announce that more than 200, 000 homes are now connected to power,” said Ruto.

He said from September this year, all students joining technical colleges will receive government bursary of Sh30, 000 each.

The government, he said, has a target of producing 3 million technical graduates in the next five years, which will be up from the current 180, 000.

“We have reduced their fees from Sh90, 000 per year to Sh50, 000 and parents will now pay only Sh20, 000 annually for all the courses,” he said.

On frequent droughts that have for many years caused livestock loses for the people of Kajiado, Ruto said the national government through the Ministry of Livestock will partner with the county to develop 10, 000 acres of hay.

“We have also bought 25 milk cooling equipment for Kajiado which are ready for delivery to help farmers to add value to the milk they produce,” said the DP.

Those present during the goat auction included the host, governor Joseph Lenku and his Narok counterpart, Samuel Tunai, Kajiado West MP George Sunkuyia, former MP Moses Sakuda, Kajiado Assembly speaker Johnson Osoi, Kajiado West MP Joseph Manje and two MPs from Narok.
