Security personnel on Saturday apprehended a track carrying 240 bags of brown sugar with documents indicating it was imported from Egypt.
What shocked the police is when the saw the documents indicating that the sugar was imported from Egypt that it was being transported to Kakamega, and yet the truck was heading to Loitokitok.
Mashuuru Deputy County Commissioner, Stephen Nyakundi said the information and documents presented to the police is suspect in nature.
“I have already contacted customs officials from Loitokitok border post to come and take over investigations from there. As lay person, I cannot verify whether the sugar is contraband or not, but the people concerned will provide Kenyans what they have found in their investigations,” said Nyakundi.
Two people were arrested and are in police custody in Emali after their truck, motor vehicle registration number KBR 715P, was also detained with the goods.
Elsewhere, Mashuuru police officers on Saturday confiscated seven gambling machines and 400 litres of illicit brew in Kenyewa trading centre near Emali town.
The police said owners of the gambling machines and the illicit brew escaped their dragnet during the operation.
Nyakundi said a known owner of the brew was still at large by Saturday evening but the police are hunting her down.
He said the machines and the brew are in custody at Emali AP Post awaiting further action.
