Three people, among ten who were crossing Kandisi River in Ongata Rongai, Kajiado County, drowned in raging floods on Thursday night.
The incident happened barely a day after three people died in a landslide in Kajiado West sub county on Wednesday.
Kajiado county commissioner, David Kipkemei and Ongata Rongai MCA Mwathi Pere called the Star at 10pm to confirm the three died after hanging on to the bridge for close to one hour.
Kipkemei said there were a total of 10 people who were crossing the bridge along Fatima Road when River Kandisi suddenly burst and swept them away.
“Initially they were ten people in the middle of the bridge when the floods suddenly swept through it. Seven people managed to swing across but three hanged on until they were later overwhelmed and swept away,” said Kipkemei on the phone.
Pere, who was still at the scene by 10.20pm said the river has four tributaries and all were swollen by late evening on Thursday.
“As we speak now, the three were swept away and it is risky to search for them now. I am now headed to Ole Kasasi area where I am told several houses have been submerged in flood water,” said Pere.
