A Chinese national who assaulted a standard gauge railway liaison officer in Ngong’s Embulmbul area, Kajiado county on Friday last week has been deported to China.

Michael Marona is a structural engineer seconded by Kenya Railways as liaison officer to the section one of the Nairobi-Naivasha standard gauge railway project.

ese who beat up Michel Marona after he found the Kenyan structural engineer taking pictures of workers, was arrested by police officers immediately and locked up in the cells.

Marona is a structural engineer attached to SGR by Kenya Railways at section one of Nairobi-Naivasha project.

Zhu, who knew Marona well, is said to have become suspicious of his actions. It is a punishable offence for workers at SGR project to work without putting on a helmet and Zhu was said to have been at the site without it.

At the Embulmbul, which is section one of the Nairobi-Naivasha SGR project, the police said Zhu attacked and seriously wounded Marona.

The Chinese was deported on Wednesday after his embassy in Nairobi made recommendation to that effect. A source at the Kenya Railways today confirmed the deportation.

“This is a good lesson to the offender, and we are still investigating other cases of assault reported within the SGR project,” said our source who could not wish to be named.

Marona said on Thursday he found himself on the receiving end when the Chinese worker caught him taking pictures of the Embulmbul site.

“I was kicked all over the body as a senior police officer attached to the site watched. The officer could not arrest him alone and so he had to call for reinforcement. After Zhu was arrested, I was called to record a statement at Ngong police station,” said Marona.

A senior police officer attached to the project, who witnessed the attack late evening on Friday said the Chinese first asked the KR official to identify himself, and when he did, he was kicked all over his body.

“I had to call for enforcement to help in saving the engineer, who within seconds was unconscious,” said the officer who declined to give his name.

Another eye witness, Henry Kinuthia who first called the Star as the Chinese was attacking Marona, said Marona had positively identified himself but the Chinese would not understand that the person he was attacking was a government official.

Police were immediately called to assist in arresting the Chinese. He was immediately arrested and handcuffed before being thrown to the back of the police vehicle.
