SAKUDA: Is Maasai Community Moving Retrogressively To Clan Cocoons?

Dear Editor,

I am directing this letter to my fellow Maasai community members. I watch with much concern the divisive politics that is sprouting up among our people.

In recent weeks, I have gained deeper knowledge of the clans system, and while I would love to brag and say that this is part of my cultural learning of the Maa community, the core of it is pointing to issues deeper than that. All of a sudden, our basis for selection of leaders is not their accreditation but rather their clan affiliation.

So where is this headed to? That is a question I asked myself. Shall the Maa community retreat to their clan boundaries? Are we moving retrogressively instead of progressively?

Shall negotiations now be back to the basis of clanism? What are we teaching our children? It’s tough enough that we must deal with the monster of tribalism.

Let God grant wisdom to the Maa leadership, and all who are steering the communities as they settle for their choice of leaders in coming elections.

Let us choose the way of progress rather than the way of clanism. Let our children learn unity from us and not discrimination along clan or family lines.

So help us God.
